I'm sitting here with 20gigs of mp3's now sync'd to my computer that I pulled off my 20gig ipod using NO ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE. Took some doin and uncovering some hidden files (which is a much easier task in Vista than prior versions).
So fuck you very much Apple for making it difficult to back up mp3's onto new computers, but y'ain't got me yet!

you have more patientce than I. I quit doing that after like 20 minutes. so I found a free program called ehPod that does the work for me :D

Yeah I tried that. It freaked out because my ipod had too much shit on it. So that began my quest to pull off manually.
Oddly, I updated the firmware after pulling all these off manualy I noticed the album covers no longer show up for the mp3's that had them. Not that I give a shit, but still...strange
