Okay one of the things that Facebook has brought into my life are people I haven't talked to in 15 odd years I went to high school with, that quite honestly, wouldn't really bother me if I never talked to again (nothing against 'em, but you know what I mean). Sometimes I'm surprised at how far along some people have come, and how much they've made of their lives. One girl in particular seems to be a successful actress in NYC theater which is most excellent. Another is a doctor in Kansas. Others are wallowing in glory long gone since high school, as if they've gone ahead and stopped living before they die. Those people happen upon me (rarely do I ever seek them out) and their profiles read like "This could have been you" warning.
Today I recieved a friend request from a fellow who falls into the that category. I had one of those "wow, here's a name I haven't heard in awhile" moments and clicked on his profile and over to the info page. The following is what is verbatim from his page:
______________________________________________________________
Activities:I am extremely active at work. The harder I work, the more money I make, and I freaking love getting paid.
Interests: Who has interests after 50-70 hours a week? Really?
I'll have interests post-retirement. Hit me up then.
(Bet you I live back by the ocean again, though.)
_______________________________________________________________
And what is this enterprising man doing with those 50-70 hours a week? A doctor? A Lawyer? Real Estate? Financial Planning? some other entity climbing a corporate ladder and/or self actualizing? Nope...according to his little employment blurb, dude is a manager at the Texas Roadhouse in Cedar Falls Iowa.
Jesus christ the more shit changes, the more it stays the same in that town.

Love it. Who knows, maybe he'll climb the corporate ladder and end up at Texas Roadhouse HQ - most likely in Winnipeg, Canada or something authentic like that.

Yeah I confirmed him. His name was Joe Foster. I suppose I should be worried about him Googling his own name and seeing this blog (that's a fairly common name, although T-sausage has a fairly big footprint on the t00bs for some reason). Whatever...if that dude expects flowers to be blown up his ass, he's come to the wrong blog.
I don't begrudge him for what he does or anything. It never ceases to amaze me how many people I had pegged to really do something with their life that turned out to live in the slow lane. I guess by the same token, I'm also surprised at people who ended up really doing cool things I never would have suspected.

Nothing wrong with what he's doing persay. I like the Texas Tumbleweed just as much as the next guy. I guess for me, it's the whole "Hey look I'm really ambitious!!" tone of the thing.

Actually, the more I think about it, I will attempt to defend the 'sound like a douche' thing.
The truth is, this dude isn't without baggage. I recall this individual in high school projecting the self-importance kids give at that age. With him particularly though (shit, this may even date back to junior high), he has this whole disdain for the group I hung out with in general, and this applied to that whole preppie click (some of which have literally interviewed with me for jobs...what fun that is let me tell you). Now, I realize I can't really begrudge somebody for the way they acted when they were 14, but it doesn't change the fact that the filter I view that dude through is based on what i know of him. Maybe that's fair, maybe it isn't, but that's the way it is.
The fact somebody who was of the description above portrays themself (at least as I interpret it) as some hardass working dude who has plans for the future suggests to me that ain't much changed with this guy. Do I feel bad about picking on him? Not really. Do I feel karma plays a role...certainly.
Since I told Frink his name, this blog post will probably show up the next time a future employer bothers to Google his name and see what comes up. I can't do anything about that, but well, said karma is a bitch. And like I said before, if he shuffles around here expecting flowers blown up his ass...this ain't the blog for him.
