Just sayin is all....
Dear music industry -
Stop it with the boxsets. Please. You already ruined Nirvana for me with that boxset that let the world know Nevermind was 90% Geffen/Sub Pop A&R and Butch Vig while the other 10% was the "genius" of Kurt Cobain. Now you are about to do the same with Jane's Addiction. Seriously, outtakes were only cool for one album, and we all know you haven't pooped out a band of that caliber since then anyway.
Seriously, these cash grabs are annoying. The album was/is the art as it was. If the songs didn't make it on to the album, it's almost always because they weren't that good to begin with. Countdown to Extinction starts with Skin O My Teeth and ends with Ashes in Your Mouth...always has, always will. The 20-30 demo versions of Smells Like Teen Spirit didn't see the light of day for a reason. All this does is cheapen the art the bands put out to begin with and rips off fans by packaging sub-quality material and calling it a "collectors' item" even though any two bit website or record store carries 'em.
Sometimes this process is done right...but you almost always get it wrong.
Most plausible premise for a cartoon EVER

Even though this is half of what it was last year at this time...it sure is nice to see a '5' that isn't to the right of the decimal this morning.
The inevitable tumble from grace will occur any moment now *sigh*
I will be most interested in seeing how this shapes up. While I don't profess to actually have all that much interest in the roots of electronic music (in its various forms), I do think it's high time Chris Randall actually wrote a book. I'm sure the color commentary he'll put alongside will make this a good read regardless of the content.
